This imagery is part of an expansive and colorful mural created by 8th grade students outside of their school at M.S. 131 on the Lower East Side. The students learned about color, contour drawings, and public art installations before doing sketches and then tracing the collaged sketches onto wall using an overhead projector. The project is one of the initiatives of the Hester Street Collaborative’s “Ground Up” education program that aims to help kids in underserved neighborhoods explore and relate to their communities. I’ve passed by the multi-faceted mural numerous times and finally looked up its backstory; it’s one of the best things about walking around in NYC. You never know what you’re going to come across.
