I walked by the Doris C. Freedman Plaza (southeast corner of Central Park) the other day and saw this vibrant, voluptuous sculpture and was immediately smitten. Artist Yinka Honibare sees himself as a cultural hybrid, having been brought up in both England and Nigeria. This particular project takes on the paradoxical and almost impossible task of manifesting the invisible. We obviously can’t see wind, but we can see its effects and so Honibare has chosen to show the dynamic movement of a piece of fabric in the wind using solid fiberglass. The fabric is painted in the West African style, an obvious homage to his roots.
