When I told a friend that I was going to Coney Island, her first reaction was, “why? it’s so depressing in the winter.” But I actually don’t feel that way at all. It is very different in the winter, but there’s a quiet solitude that envelopes the boardwalk and the surrounding streets. People walk around in their heavy winter coats and there’s snow on the ground. And it’s great to get a chance to stop and look at the various murals in the neighborhood. One of my favorite from the bunch is the New York Aquarium, Ocean Plastic Awareness Mural Project by Danielle Mastrion. It’s colorful, powerful, and informative.
