Eduardo Kobra Mural: Ellis Island

The weather might be gray, but our city walls are pretty colorful these days thanks to Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra and his 5-month NYC residency. These giant murals, adorned with his trademark kaleidoscopic squares and triangles, range from famous personalities to hot button issues like gun control and—yes, it’s a controversial topic in NYC—bicycle lanes. As you can tell from the title, this particular piece is about immigration; it is made up of five real immigrants who arrived in NYC via Ellis Island a century ago. It is part of the largest mural project in NYC and is installed on the façade of the City-As-School, which also happens to be artist Jean-Michel Basquiat’s alma mater.
