The East Coast Memorial sits across the New York Harbor from the Statue of Liberty and commemorates U.S. servicemen who died in the Atlantic Ocean in WWII. 4,610 names, along with their rank, organization and state, are inscribed on both sides of eight 19-foot-tall granite pylons.
These pylons are separated into two rows of four and flank the centerpiece of the Memorial: a massive bronze eagle elevated on a black granite pedestal. The eagle holds a laurel wreath while sitting on an ocean wave to symbolize mourning at sea.
The memorial was designed by the architectural firm of Gehron & Seltzer. The eagle statue was created by Italian-born sculptor Albino Manca.
