Bethesda Terrace Arcade II

Bethesda Terrace Arcade II

Bethesda Terrace Arcade is a beautiful arched subterranean walkway in Central Park that connects the Mall (my favorite part of the park) to Bethesda Fountain via a grand staircase. The arcade was designed by architect/designer Jacob Wrey Mould in the 1960s, who conceived it as an open-air reception hall that would provide visitors reprieve from the elements. It features around 16,000 intricate, patterned tiles from Minton Tile Company in the ceiling, which were originally used on the floors of European cathedrals.

Impromptu concerts take place at the arcade all the time, I’m guessing because of the cool acoustics and the beautiful setting. I love it when I walk by and find people singing or playing the cello or the guitar; when music fills this space, it makes everything in this world a little bit better.
